T-CAP Variety and Germplasm Releases (2011-2013)

Cultivars developed by TCAP breeder at the end of WheatCAP grant but NOT reported before

  1. ‘Desert King- High Protein’ (PVP= 201000585) is high quality desert durum wheat variety selected with molecular markers for improved grain protein content (GPC-B1), improved semolina color (PSY1 A-B hybrid allele) and higher pasta color stability (lipoxygenase deletion). Desert King-HP was registered before the start of this grant but was not reported in previous Wheat CAP.
  2. ‘Blanca Grande 515’ (PVP= 201100037) is the results of collaboration between Syngenta and the University of California. Dr. Dubcovsky’s lab at UC Davis introgressed the stripe rust resistance genes Yr5 and Yr15 into the susceptible variety Summit from Syngenta with support of WheatCAP.
  3. ‘Billings’ (PVP= 201000098) was relased by the Oklahoma State University with support of WheatCAP and combines early maturity, disease resistance, and desirable grain quality for the southern Great Plains of the USA (PVP).
  4. ‘Voyager’(PVP= 201200011) was relased by Busch Ag. Resources through collaboration with BarleyCAP.
  5. ‘Pete’ (PVP= 201000131) is a beardless hard red winter (HRW) wheat variety released by the OAES worthy of either forage- or grain-based management systems. Molecular markers were used to primarily differentiate (during PVP application) this variety from a previously released beardless variety, Deliver, at the Lr34 locus

2011 cultivars releases 

  1. ‘SY Tyra’ (PVP= 201200013) is the results of collaboration between Montana State University and Syngenta. ‘SY Tyra’ is a solid-stem variety resistant to wheat stem sawfly, developed by marker assisted backcrossing. It is being marketed in Montana and North Dakota.
  2. ‘New Dirkwin’ (PVP= 201100455) is the results of collaboration between Baglietto Seeds and the University of California. Dr. Dubcovsky’s lab at UC Davis introgressed the stripe rust resistance genes Yr5 and Yr15 into the susceptible variety Dirkwin that was marketed by Baglietto seeds in California.
  3. ‘Tipai’ (PVP= 201200013) is a high quality desert durum wheat variety released by the California Wheat Breeding program “Tipai” was selected with molecular markers for improved semolina color (PSY1 A-B hybrid allele) and higher pasta color stability (lipoxygenase deletion).
  4. ‘NE01481’ (PVP 201100399) which will be marketed as Husker genetics Brand McGill and ‘NI04421’ (PVP 201100398) which will be marketed as Husker genetics Brand Robidoux were released by Nebraska Breeding program. In both cases molecular markers were used to characterize the lines for major adaptation (vernalization photoperiod, dwarfing), end-use quality (glutenin alleles), and various disease (mainly rusts and viruses) and insect (mainly aphids) resistance genes.
  5. ‘Garrison’ (PVP= 201200049) is a widely adapted HRW wheat variety released by the OAEs with enhanced leaf spotting disease protection, and features a unique reproductive developmental pattern that was identified using a gene-marker-based trait descriptive tool at three key loci: VRN-A1, PPD-D1, and VRN-D3.
  6. ‘Ruby Lee’ (PVP= 201200050) is a widely adapted, HRW wheat variety released by the OAES. Molecular marker assays for high molecular weight glutenin subunits were used to show that Ruby Lee carries the Glu-D1 allele for subunit pair 2+12, even though Ruby Lee demonstrates exceptional milling and baking quality.

2011 germplasm releases

  1. Two adapted hard red spring wheat donor lines carrying three new stripe rust resistance QTLs (Lowe et al. 2011, TAG. 123:143–157).
  • GSTR 13606 (RIL148 UC1110 x PI610750) = QYr.ucw-3BS, Yr48 (5AL), & QYr.ucw-2BS.
  • GSTR 13634 (RIL191 UC1110 x PI610750) = adapted spring donor line carrying stripe rust resistance QTL QYr.ucw-3BS, Yr48 (5AL), and QYr.ucw-2BS.

2. Two adapted spring donor lines carrying only the QYr.ucw-3BS stripe rust resistance QTL (i.e. they are susceptible for 5AL and 2BS).

  • GSTR 13600 (RIL140) = QYr.ucw-3BS alone.
  • GSTR 13664 (RIL233) = QYr.ucw-3BS alone.

3. Two adapted spring donor lines carrying only the stripe rust resistance locus Yr48 (i.e. they are susceptible for 3BS and 2BS).

  • GSTR 13504 (RIL4) = Yr48 alone.
  • GSTR 13618 (RIL167) = Yr48 alone.

2011 mapping populations

  1. Dubcovsky, J. Stripe rust resistance mapping population deposited in the NSGC: GSTR numbers 13501-13687= 186 recombinant inbred lines from the cross UC1110 x PI610750.
  2. Anderson, J. MN98550–5/MN99394–1 hexaploid wheat recombinant inbred mapping population. This population comprises 139 F6:8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) adapted to the Upper Midwest region of the USA: PI 660540 MAP (MN98550–5) x PI 660541 MAP (and MN99394–1).

2012 cultivar releases

  1. Byrd’ (PVP= 201200432), ‘Denali’ (PVP= 201200433), and ‘Brawl CL Plus’ (PVP= 201200434) were released by Colorado State University. Byrd is a high yielding variety under both dryland and irrigated conditions, carries stripe rust resistance and an unknown source of Ug-99 stem rust resistance, and has excellent milling and baking quality. Denali has shown excellent yields across the High Plains. Brawl CL Plus is the first public two-gene Clearfield wheat, showing comparable yields as other Colorado Clearfield varieties in addition to improved stripe rust resistance, test weight, and milling and baking quality.
  2. Verdant (PVP= 201200471) is a barley varieties released by Oregon State University.
  3. Atlantic’ (PVP= 201200448) is a high yielding, early heading feed barley released by the Virginia Tech breeding program.
  4. Hard red spring variety ‘Rollag’ (PVP= 201200096) MN. Rollag has a unique combination of highest available resistance to Fusarium head blight and strong straw. Rollag contains the Fhb1 QTL for Fusarium head blight resistance and Lr34.
  5. WB9879CLP (PVP= 201200491) is a two-gene Clearfield variety with resistance to imidazolinone herbicides developed by Montana State University and licensed to Westbred LLC for commercialization.  The genes for herbicide resistance were backcrossed into the widely grown variety Choteau using marker-assisted selection.  WB9879CLP is being grown in areas of Montana and North Dakota with wheat stem sawfly pressure.
  6. Patwin-515 (PVP= 20120476) is a hard white spring wheat released by J. Dubcovsky (University of California, Davis) which includes stripe rust resistance genes Yr5 and Yr15.
  7. Two SRW wheat cultivars 5187J (PVP= 201200474) and 12V51 (PVP= 201200475) were developed and released by Carl Griffey at Virginia Tech. Cultivar 5187J has Sr24 + 1A.1R translocation conferring resistance to Ug99; and cultivar 12V51 is highly resistant to glume blotch (S. nodorum) and has the Lr9 gene contributing to leaf rust resistance.

  9. ‘Summit 515’ (PVP= 201200086) is the results of collaboration between Syngenta and the University of California. Dr. Dubcovsky’s lab at UC Davis introgressed the stripe rust resistance genes Yr5 and Yr15 into the susceptible variety Summit from Syngenta.

2012 Germplasm releases

Recombinant inbreed lines with Yr36 but without the closely linked gene GPC-B1 in both tetraploid (PI 656793) and hexaploid wheat (PI 664549). The hexaploid recombinant line is particularly useful for soft wheat breeding programs.

2013 cultivar releases

  1. UI Stone (IDO599, PVP= 201300342) soft white spring wheat released by Jianli Chen at the University of Idaho has high yield under both irrigation and water limited conditions as well as excellent end-use quality. UI Stone has good resistance to FHB and the resistance QTL is being mapped. Marketed in collaboration with LimaGrain.
  2. Norden (PVP=  201300125) is a Hard red spring competitive yielder with high test weight, good straw strength and leaf rust resistance not based on Lr21. Norden contains the Fhb1 QTL for Fusarium head blight resistance and Lr34.
  3. Antero (CO07W245, PVP= 201300476) is a hard white winter wheat developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. Antero carries the stripe rust resistance gene Yr17 confirmed by the presence of the Ventriup-LN2 marker. DNA marker assays for high molecular weight glutenin subunits have shown that Antero carries the 2*, 7+8 and 5+10 glutenin subunits and that is does not carry the T1BL-1RS or T1AL-1RS translocation.
  4. California wheat breeding program: Durum variety ‘Miwok’ (PVP= 201400031) selected for low cadmium using molecular markers for the Cdu1 gene. Foundation seed is available in 2013.
  5. Washington State University wheat breeding program (4 varieties):
    a. ‘Glee’ (PVP= 201300129) is a hard red spring wheat. Complex stripe rust resistance genes selected with markers.
    b. ‘Dayn’ (PVP= 201300130) is a hard white spring wheat from WSU. Complex stripe rust resistance genes selected with markers.
    c. ‘Otto’ (PVP= 201300360) is soft white winter wheat which is a backcross derivative of Eltan including the Pch1 gene for foot rot resistance.
    d. ‘Puma’ (PVP= 201400085) is a soft white winter wheat which contains the Pch1 gene for foot rot resistance. This line also has good adult plant resistance to stripe rust, tolerance to low pH soils, and tolerance to Cephalosporium stripe (PVP in progress).
  6. ‘Cowboy’ (PVP= 201300477) is a hard red winter wheat developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. DNA marker assays for high molecular weight glutenin subunits have shown that Cowboy carries the glutenin subunits 1, 7+8 and 2+2 and does not carry the T1BL-1RS or T1AL-1RS translocation.
  7. 2013412 (SS 8412, PVP= 201300433) ‘SS 8412’ is a SRW to be soon released by Virginia Tech wheat breeding program. SS 8412 has the 1A.1R translocation and Sr24 conferring resistance to Ug99.
  8. UI Silver (IDO658B, PVP= 201400011) is a hard white winter cultivar released for dryland production by Jianli Chen from the University of Idaho wheat breeding program. This cultivar has industry preferred end-use quality for whole grain products. This line was selected using markers for GluD1 and GluA3 and GluB3 strong gluten alleles and for a QTL associated with baking volume.
  9. ‘Gallagher’ (PVP= 201300134) and ‘Iba’ (PVP= 201300135) are two HRW wheat varieties developed by the OAES as half-sib progeny of the variety Duster, which leads in wheat acreage planted in Oklahoma. Gene Lr34 was shown to be present in Iba but not in Gallagher based on the presence of a resistant haplotype for three polymorphic marker sites. This haplotype has since been differentiated from that found in other common HRW varieties carrying Lr34, such as 2174.

2013 Cultivar releases without PVP

  1. Barley P-845 (tested as NE99845) is a six-rowed winter barley released in 2013 by Steve Baenziger at the University of Nebraska. Due to the small market size and it the expected small seed sales, PVP will not be applied for this cultivar. It will be marketed exclusively through Paramount Seeds of Quinter, KS, hence the P-845 designation. Its performance is superior to currently grown barley cultivars in western KS and OK. Molecular markers were used to help characterize its level of winter-hardiness
